Green-School

Green-Schools Global Citizenship Marine Environment flag.

We are delighted to let you know that our school has been successful in our application for the Green-Schools Global Citizenship Marine Environment flag.

In addition, as well as achieving our flag, our school, Scoil Mhuire Réalt na Mara, has been selected as the Primary School Regional Winner for the East and Midlands Region in the Marine School of the Year Awards. This award was introduced in 2024 and aims to recognise the most outstanding schools nationwide, for their work on the Marine Environment theme.

Our school has won many accolades for our work on Biodiversity and Green Schools including, 1st place in the Wicklow County Council Environmental Awards, !st place in the Biodiversity Schools Award, 1st place in the Schools Awareness Award, 1st place in Clean Coasts Awards and a national Gold Incredible Edible Award (Agri Aware) We also work with the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group and Seakeepers Project.

All our pupils receive vegetable gardening classes and they rotate the vegetables they plant every year. At the end of their eight years our pupils will have planted many different types of vegetables. We harvest seeds from the previous year to learn about planting. The pupils maintain and care for their vegetables and we have an Open Garden Day every June to sell our produce. We are also lucky to have a school pond full of life including newts and frog spawn!
