Our school was delighted to welcome a volunteer from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution for a very informative and engaging talk on water safety. As a coastal school, learning how to stay safe near the sea is extremely important for our pupils and the visit provided valuable lessons for everyone involved.
The RNLI volunteer spoke to the children about the dangers that can arise around water and explained the importance of making safe choices when visiting beaches, rivers, lakes and harbours. Pupils learned about recognising different beach flags, understanding tides and currents and knowing what to do if they or someone else gets into difficulty in the water.
One of the key messages shared was the importance of the “Float to Live” technique. They learned how floating on your back can help you stay calm and conserve energy until help arrives. The volunteer also reminded pupils never to enter the water alone and always to tell an adult where they are going.
We would like to sincerely thank the RNLI for taking the time to visit our school and for sharing such important life-saving advice. The visit was both educational and enjoyable and we are confident that the children came away with a greater awareness of how to stay safe in and around water.
